The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has provided major relief to thousands of students who are worried about their Class 12 marks and IIT admissions. The decision comes after many CBSE students raised concerns about receiving lower-than-expected marks, reportedly due to the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Several students have already applied for re-evaluation or verification of their answer sheets, hoping that their marks will improve after review.
Traditionally, students seeking admission to IITs must satisfy both the JEE Advanced rank requirement and the Class 12 eligibility criteria. For General, OBC-NCL and EWS category students, at least 75 per cent marks in Class 12 are required. For SC, ST and PwD category students, the minimum requirement is 65 per cent.
However, IIT Roorkee has now announced a special arrangement for students whose marks are currently below the required percentage but who have applied for re-evaluation. This move has brought relief to many candidates who feared losing their chance of admission despite performing well in JEE Advanced.
Relief for students awaiting revised marks
According to IIT Roorkee, students who currently have less than 75 per cent marks in Class 12 (or less than 65 per cent for SC, ST and PwD candidates) can still participate in the counselling process. These students can fill in their college and course choices during JoSAA counselling and will be considered for seat allocation based on their JEE rank.
This means that students do not have to wait for their revised marks before taking part in counselling. They can continue with the admission process like other candidates.
However, there is an important condition. Students must submit their revised scorecard after re-evaluation if their marks improve and meet the required eligibility criteria.
IIT Roorkee has stated that candidates must send their revised mark sheets by July 15, 2026. The revised scorecard should show at least 75 per cent marks for General, OBC-NCL and EWS students, or 65 per cent marks for SC, ST and PwD students.
Students need to send the updated scorecard through the official email address provided by IIT Roorkee. Once the revised marks are verified and found eligible, admission will be granted according to the seat allotted to the student at the end of the fourth round of counselling.
This decision is expected to help a large number of students who believe that their scores may improve after the verification and re-evaluation process.

JoSAA counselling process and seat increase
While IIT Roorkee has announced relief for students awaiting revised marks, there has been no official change in eligibility rules on the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) website. The standard eligibility conditions remain in place for IIT admissions.
Meanwhile, JoSAA has released the seat matrix for the 2026 admission cycle. One of the biggest developments this year is the significant increase in seats across participating institutions. A total of 4,470 additional seats have been added compared to the previous year.
The increase in seats is expected to provide more opportunities for students seeking admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutions.
Students who qualify for JEE Main or JEE Advanced can participate in the JoSAA counselling process through the official website. The counselling process helps allocate seats based on a student's rank, preferences and seat availability.
To apply for JoSAA counselling, candidates must first visit the official JoSAA portal and log in using their JEE credentials. After logging in, students can complete the choice-filling process by selecting their preferred institutes and courses.
Candidates are advised to carefully choose and arrange their preferences because seat allocation depends heavily on the order of choices submitted.
After selecting their choices, students must verify their details through an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. Once verification is completed, they can lock and submit their choices for consideration.
Students should save a copy of the submitted application and keep all counselling-related documents ready for future verification.
Another important point for candidates is the counselling fee. There is no separate registration fee for JoSAA counselling. However, students who receive a seat allotment for the first time in any round must pay a processing fee of Rs 5,000 as part of the seat acceptance process.
This processing charge forms a part of the overall admission procedure and confirms the candidate's willingness to accept the allotted seat.
The latest announcement from IIT Roorkee is especially important for students who are confident that their marks will improve after re-evaluation. Instead of missing out on counselling opportunities, they can now continue participating in the admission process while waiting for their revised results.
For many students and families, this decision reduces stress and uncertainty during an already competitive admission season. It ensures that deserving candidates are not denied an opportunity simply because the re-evaluation process is still underway.
Students are advised to keep checking official updates from IIT Roorkee and JoSAA and ensure that all deadlines are followed carefully. Missing the deadline for submitting revised scorecards may affect admission eligibility.
With increased seats, ongoing counselling and special provisions for students awaiting revised marks, the 2026 IIT admission process offers a positive opportunity for many aspirants aiming to secure a place in India's premier engineering institutions.
